Merkur Theater Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Merkur Theater Prize of the Münchner Merkur newspaper has been awarded since 1996. Every year at the end of a season, the newspaper's culture department nominates singers, dancers, actors and cabaret artists who, in their opinion, were particularly outstanding. The newspaper's readers can choose their favorite from this group of nominees by post or email.

The top three winners are each awarded the prize, which depicts a statue of the god Mercury in the portrayal of the Renaissance master Giovanni da Bologna , a copy of which adorns the counter hall of the press house , and which the Munich sculptor Vincent Mitzev has reproduced.

In 1997, the publisher of Münchner Merkur, Dirk Ippen , also donated a sponsorship prize worth 2000 euros, which is awarded with a smaller version of the statue.
