2nd indoor hockey Bundesliga 1996/97 (men)
The 1996/97 season was the first season of the 2nd Bundesliga, which was newly introduced in the hall. As in the 1st Bundesliga, the game was played in two groups, north and south.
qualification
The results of the previous indoor season 1995/96 were decisive for the qualification. The four best teams of the Regionalliga Nord and Regionalliga West each qualified for the northern group. One of these teams was able to qualify directly for the 1st Bundesliga in the promotion round north . The relegated team from Group North of the 1st Bundesliga joined the seven remaining teams. The five best teams of the Regionalliga Süd and the four best teams of the Regionalliga Ost qualified for the group south. Of these, two teams were even able to qualify directly for the 1st Bundesliga in the promotion round south . The relegated from the group south of the 1st division completed the group south.
The reason for the different promotion regulations in the north and south groups was the change of HTC Uhlenhorst Mülheim from the south group of the 1st Bundesliga to the north group, as the club belongs to the west region (North Rhine-Westphalia). In order to compensate for the resulting overhang in the north group of the 1st Bundesliga, there were two relegated teams in the north group of the 2nd Bundesliga this season and there were three relegated teams in the regional leagues.
