2012: Doomsday is an American sci-fi mockbuster directed by Nick Everhart from 2008 based on the 2009 blockbuster 2012 by Roland Emmerich . The extremely low budgeted direct-to-DVD production is based on the thesis that the end of the world, the apocalypse , will occur in 2012 after the end of the long count of the Maya calendar and was published on June 25, 2009 in Germany. As in other Faith Films films , Christian messages are to be told at the level of truth .

action

In 2012, the earth was hit by devastating natural disasters , the frequency and intensity of which threaten to increase. The government organizations are at a loss and disagreed, but predict the most varied doomsday scenarios. The US Geological Survey, for example, warns of a slowdown in the earth's rotation , resulting in widespread flooding in coastal regions. On the advice of Lloyd, the head of the geological service, the west coasts of North and South America are finally evacuated. Out of concern for his daughter Sarah, a devout missionary who is in Mexico , Lloyd tries to save her on his own.

Meanwhile, archaeologist Frank Richards finds an old crucifix in an underground chamber system in Orizaba, Mexico , before the ancient site is destroyed in a volcanic eruption. The strange relic initially puzzles him. At some point he suspects a connection between the end of the Maya long-term calendar and a prophecy that leads him to a large temple in Chichén Itzá . Together with his wife Trish, who dies in the further course of the plot, he takes the arduous journey into the old ruins.

Paramedic Susan, who has paranormal abilities, also drives to Chichén Itzá at different times. In another, parallel storyline, Lloyd's daughter Sarah also travels to this region accompanied by heavily pregnant Wakanna.

Once there, the most diverse groups collide. Frank finally sets a mechanism in motion in a pyramid that ultimately confirms his theory and fulfills an inscrutable prophecy. Meanwhile, the end of the world is initiated. Wakanna eventually gives birth to a baby. An off-voice tells the viewer at this point that this is not the expected end, but only a new beginning for the world.

criticism

"Cheap film with pathetic effects that leads a fundamentalist as well as freely interpreted Christian faith to save the world."
