July 22 is a feature film by the British filmmaker Paul Greengrass from the year 2018 . The focus of the period film is 22 July 2011 and that of Anders Behring Breivik committed 2011 Norway . The film premiered at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival .

On the one hand, the film reconstructs the double attack of right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik . First he detonated a bomb in downtown Oslo , only to cause a massacre of the young people there on the island of Utøya only a little later . On the other hand, the film reconstructs the trial. Next to Breivik himself, Viljar Hanssen, a survivor of Utøya, is at the center of the action. Breivik's defense attorney Lippestadt and the political actors around Prime Minister Stoltenberg are also shown in more detail in the film.

The film was partly shot in autumn 2017 on location in Oslo and what was then the province of Buskerud . In Norway, a petition has been launched against a filming permit on Utøya, which is supported by 20,000 Norwegians. The scenes that take place in the film on the island of Utøya were created on the Tröllaskagi peninsula on Iceland . The film has been shown on the Netflix streaming service since October 10, 2018 .
