- After a decisive victory at Mylae over the Mamertines , who spread fear and terror in Syracuse from Messana , Hieron II is proclaimed King of Syracuse by his soldiers. However, Hieron was prevented from occupying Messana by the Carthaginian objection .

- In the Roman Empire , silver coins , so-called denarii , were minted for the first time . The goddess Roma appears on coins for the first time.
