3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl- N , N , N -trimethylammonium chloride is a slightly volatile, flammable solid. It is easily soluble in water and its aqueous solution is acidic. The commercial product is an approximately 60% aqueous solution. To protect the compound against hydrolysis , a pH of 3 to 5 must be maintained.

3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl- N , N , N -trimethylammonium chloride is used for the cationization (synthesis of cationic bipolymers ) of cellulose , starch and similar compounds. It also serves to quaternize compounds with hydroxyl , amino and other functional groups .
