3-Mercaptopropionic acid is a chemical compound from the group of substituted thiols and carboxylic acids .

Extraction and presentation

The chemical reaction of beta- propiolactone with sodium hydrogen sulfide produces 3-mercaptopropionic acid. Other industrial synthesis methods are also known. Biotechnological processes can also be used for synthesis.

properties

3-Mercaptopropionic acid is a flammable, hardly inflammable, colorless liquid with a rancid odor that is miscible with water. Its aqueous solution reacts strongly acidic.

use

The use as a stabilizer, antioxidant, catalyst and chemical intermediate is described. The compound is widely used as a flavoring in the food and beverage industry. It is also used in the manufacture of PVC stabilizers, which are used as chain transfer agents in polymerizations. It can be used as a primary or secondary color stabilizer in combination with phenolic antioxidant for polymers. It acts as a sulfide ion equivalent and is used in the manufacture of diaryl sulfide from aryl iodide .

safety instructions

The vapors of 3-mercaptopropionic acid can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 93 ° C, ignition temperature 350 ° C).
