Exactly one day before the summer tour starts, the owner of a small country circus tragically dies. To somehow save the season, the circus troupe turns to his eldest daughter, Kate. She turned her back on the circus 15 years ago, so the artists are all the more surprised that she lets herself be persuaded. On the way to her unloved circus, she meets Vittorio, who helps her with a car breakdown. Fascinated by Kate, he follows the circus and begins to settle into the daily routine of the artists. He even does a circus act. But what really draws him to the circus is to learn Kate's secret: Why did she leave the circus years ago to return after her father's death?

The shooting took place in Pic Saint-Loup as well as in the Cinecittà studios in Rome .
The film was shown for the first time as part of the competition at the 66th Venice Film Festival and subsequently at numerous international festivals, including on October 26, 2009 at the Viennale and on July 1, 2010 at the Munich Film Festival .
criticism
Cristina Nord wrote in the taz that Jacques Rivette's film was “a small film, a little old-fashioned like the traveling circus, but precisely in it round”. Rivette staged the film “without great emphasis or drama, but with mild humor and a preference for theatrical resolutions”.
Awards
After participating in the competition for the Golden Lion at the 66th Venice Film Festival , Sergio Castellitto was nominated for Best Actor for Nastro d'Argento in 2010 .
