49th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 49th Infantry Division was a German infantry division during World War II . The division was set up on February 1, 1944 near Boulogne in France from the 191st Reserve Division (Wehrmacht) . In mid-August 1944, the unit was used against Allied troops in the Paris area. After heavy losses, the retreat across the border at Aachen took place on September 11, 1944. In the Aachen area near the village of Würselen , the division was used again against Allied troops. In doing so, however, the unit was almost completely worn out. On December 5, 1944, the division was disbanded and its remnants were incorporated into the 246th Infantry Division .
