4 is the fourth studio album by the US / UK rock band Foreigner . It was released on Atlantic Records in July 1981. The album was nominated for a 1982 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal .

background

With the album, the band completed the transition to hard rock that began with Head Games . Ian McDonald and Al Greenwood had previously left the band, which is why 4 was composed by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones .

The record was originally supposed to be called Silent Partners . A cover for this album had already been commissioned. The artist Storm Thorgerson designed it. The band changed the album title, but also rejected the cover because it seemed "too homosexual ". The cover then used was designed by Bob Defrin based on the model of the opening tape of a film.

reception

Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic .com called 4 the culmination of the career of Foreigner, although the band three years later with Agent Provocateur have achieved an even greater success. He awarded 4.5 out of five stars. Rock Hard magazine put the album in 237th place in the list of its 500 best albums. Thomas Kupfer wrote that 4 is "still a milestone in melodic hard rock today and is nowhere near as gaudy as the Foreigner records in the years that followed."
