History and architecture

The tower in the city context

Designed by the architect Bruce Graham and the engineer Fazlur Khan , both from the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM). Construction of the building began in 1965 and was completed in 1969. The New York company Tishman Construction was responsible for the construction .

When completed, 875 North Michigan Avenue was 344 meters tall, making it the second tallest building in the world after the Empire State Building in New York City . Until 1973 the Aon Center was finished, it was the tallest skyscraper in Chicago, but was surpassed again in 1974 by the Willis Tower (then still Sears Tower), and in 2009 by the Trump Tower . Taking into account its antennas, which bring it to a total height of 457 meters, the John Hancock Center was also the tallest skyscraper in the world for nine years, from its completion in 1969 to 1978, its antenna top also towering over that of the Empire State Building . Unlike other skyscrapers, the masts on the John Hancock Center were erected immediately upon completion rather than several years later. Only when the antenna was installed on the north tower of the World Trade Center in 1978 , which brought the tower 417 meters high to a total of 527 meters, was this record broken. After the Willis Tower was also equipped with antennas in 1982, it also achieved the status of the tallest structure in terms of absolute height in the city of Chicago.

Today, 875 North Michigan Avenue is the fourth tallest building in Chicago and the eighth tallest building in the United States . With an antenna, which is not part of the building architecture (unlike spiers), it is 457 meters high, making it the 18-tallest free-standing structure in the world (including television towers). It even towers above the Petronas Towers (452 meters) by five meters and the Empire State Building (443 meters) by 14 meters. Still, it's not the tallest structure in the city: the 527-meter-high Willis Tower is also in Chicago. The John Hancock Center is also the third tallest free-standing structure in the USA after the 541 meter high One World Trade Center in New York and the Willis Tower. Characteristic of the building are the crossings of the steel skeleton visible in the facade , the shape of the building tapering towards the top and the dark anodized aluminum facade . This is also evident in the Willis Tower, which is also located in Chicago. This was also designed by the same architect, but inaugurated five years later.

Located on the prestigious North Michigan Avenue in the immediate vicinity of Lake Shore Drive , the resulting wind loads of the "windy city" and the desired slimness of the structure were a challenge for the engineers. The inclined struts provided the necessary stiffening. When it was completed, the John Hancock Center was rejected because of its black, repellent facade; today it is one of Chicago's landmarks.

The name of the building comes from the client, the insurance company John Hancock Insurance , which in turn is named after the President of the Continental Congress and first signatory of the American Declaration of Independence, John Hancock (* 1737, † 1793).

875 North Michigan Avenue was one of the first major skyscrapers to house residential units. There is office space up to the 43rd floor. On the 44th floor there is a swimming pool, a fitness center, the entrance hall and a small shop for the residents. The swimming pool on this floor is the highest in any building in North America and is considered an attraction. Floors 45 to 93 are inhabited by private individuals and form the so-called “resident area”, which can only be entered by their residents and their guests.

The observatory is located on its 94th floor at a height of 314 m . From here, on a clear day, there is a 100 km view over Chicago and Lake Michigan . The Signature Room restaurant is located on the 95th and 96th floors . In February 2013, the highest ice rink in the world at a height of 300 meters was opened as a new visitor attraction on the 94th floor . The area of the ice rink in the John Hancock Center is 80 square meters and allows visitors a view over Chicago.
