history
The station started on April 1, 1998 at 12:00 am as "88.6 Der Musiksender.", Although the name "88.6 Live" had been communicated beforehand. Later he called himself "88.6 Der Supermix" or "88.6 The Supermix for Vienna" and "88.6 - We play what we want". Meanwhile the station appears again under "88.6 Der Musiksender".
In October 2005, the station said goodbye to traditional format radio under the motto "We play what we want" . The relaunch then brought a new, loose style of moderation and an enormously enlarged choice of music with them. The program was based not only on successful titles from the 1980s and 1990s and current hits, but also on rarities in music history that cannot be found on conventional format radios. It didn’t matter which year or which genre they were to be attributed to. Music from all decades and all musical styles was played. In addition, there was current traffic information and hourly news every half hour (10 minutes before every full hour). The claim and music format were inspired by the American Jack FM format.
In mid-May 2012, 88.6 merged with HiT FM. With the merger, the slogan "We play what we want" was overturned. Since then, an approach to the broadcasting scheme of a format radio has been evident. The program in Lower Austria is still different from the one in Vienna and is listed as 88.6 Der Musiksender in Niederösterreich . The HiT FM website was discontinued with the merger. The programs in Lower Austria and Burgenland are broadcast from St. Pölten; As before, music and moderation for the Vienna area will be broadcast from Vienna Heiligenstadt .
Since January 2017, radio 88.6 has been broadcasting uniformly in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. With the amendment to the PrR-G in the summer of 2015, a new form of private radio license and thus the merger of regional and local radio stations into a cross-federal regional radio license was made possible. The standardization resulted in a brand relaunch with a new slogan: "This is how life rocks."
