98 Mute was an American punk band from Hermosa Beach , California that was formed in 1993 and split in 2002.

history

The band was formed in 1993 and consisted of singer Pat Ivie, guitarist Jason Page, bassist Doug Weems and drummer Justin Thirsk. In 1996 a first self-titled album followed on Theologian Records . The band then held gigs and took part in the Vans Warped Tour in 1997 and 1998 . In 1997 the band could also be heard on various compilations and could be heard in the skate videos Good Times and The Show . In 1998 the second album Class of 98 followed and the band also played with groups such as GBH , Pennywise , 7 Seconds , H₂O and blink-182 . The next album called Slow Motion Riot followed in 2000 via Epitaph Records . However, only a few appearances followed, as the members were busy with their jobs or were busy at school. The album was produced by Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge. The next album, After the Fall, followed on Epitaph Records in 2002 and was also produced by Fletcher Dragge. In September of the same year, the band announced their breakup.

style

According to the band's biography on epitaph.com , the band was influenced by groups like Bad Brains , Descendents and Pennywise and made topics such as politics, drugs, the worship of heroes and the punk scene the subject of their songs. According to Allmusic's Mike DaRonco , the band sounds like a mix of Black Flag , Circle Jerks , Agent Orange , Pennywise and Bad Religion . According to Elmar Salmutter from Metal Hammer , the group on Slow Motion Riot is very reminiscent of Pennywise and even surpasses the current album Straight Ahead . According to Salmutter, the group tried to break away from the Pennywise comparisons on After the Fall and sometimes use non-punk instruments such as an acoustic guitar or a fiddle . The group has transformed from a punk rock band with light hardcore punk influences into a group with more depth, variety and hardness.
