The A940 road is an A-road in the Scottish Council Areas Moray and Highland .

The road begins as a junction from the A96 ( Aberdeen - Inverness ) on the north edge of Forres . It forms the main street of the 9000-inhabitant community and leaves Forres in a south-westerly direction. Passing the Loch of Blairs , it follows the Findhorn for 6.5 km to the confluence of the B9007 . From now on , the A940 runs on the east bank of the Divie tributary , connects to the hamlet of Dunphail and finally crosses the Divie. Beyond the crossing, the road follows the course of the Dorback Burn . The A940 passes the 456 m high Knock of Braemoray . After a total length of 23.1 km, it ends near the hamlet of Dava and not far from Lake Lochindorb , where it joins the A939 ( Nairn - Bridge of Gairn ). On the last few meters of the road it forms the border between the Council Areas Moray and Highland.
