The ASA Roll-Bar (also just Roll Bar without a hyphen) was a racing car built by Autocostruzione for long-distance races . Only a small number of these vehicles were produced before the factory closed. The cars had few races with moderate success.

history

Despite financial difficulties, ASA presented the Roll-Bar at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show . A notchback coupé designed as a long-distance racing car with a front engine. It was to be equipped with a 1.3-liter engine for European racing and a 1.8-liter engine for US racing. As far as is known, only three or four coupés with the 1.3-liter engine were produced under the designation RB613 until the ASA closed in 1967.

Racing

The roll-bar racing cars made their first appearance at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1966 . For this competition, the North American Racing Team used an ASA RB613, start number 54, with the drivers François Pasquier and Robert Mieusset , and the ASA works team used an ASA RB613, with the chassis number 21004 and the start number 61, with the drivers Ignazio Giunti and Spartaco Dini . Both vehicles could not finish the race successfully. The works car broke down with a clutch defect and the NART racing car had an accident with a CD SP66 .

In 1967 the Ring-Free Oil Racing Team used the Roll-Bar with the chassis number 21004 at the Daytona 24-hour race and the Sebring 12-hour race . The vehicle was driven in both races by Donnan Mae Mims and Suzi Dietrich . During the daytona race on 4th / 5th February 1967 , start number 96, could not be finished successfully, the team reached the race on April 1, 1967 in Sebring , start number 63, the 25th place in the overall standings. This success brought the team important international points for a possible qualification for other races, such as B. LeMans. But no further races were contested.

Description of the vehicle

A six-cylinder in-line engine with three double carburetors and a displacement of 1300 cm³ was developed for the European market and a four-cylinder in-line engine with two double carburetors and 1800 cm³ was developed for racing in the USA. Both engines had an overhead camshaft. The vehicles had rear-wheel drive and a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox. The chassis was a tubular frame construction with a roll bar and had independent wheel suspension at the front and a rigid axle at the rear. It was also equipped with a four-wheel disc brake. The notchback coupé with targa roof was made of plastic and was manufactured by the Carrozzeria Corbetta company based on a design by Luigi Chinetti junior . The coupé presented at the Geneva Motor Show and the press was designed as a sports car and, apart from the air inlet for the radiator, had no other air inlets or outlets. There was also no quick filler cap on the right rear, but a conventional filler neck with a filler flap. The structure has been changed for the races. The engine was arranged in front. The vehicle had left-hand drive and only the driver's seat was installed.

Vehicle designations

Roll bar

There was no uniform spelling for Roll-Bar. In a press release from 1966, Roll Bar is written without a hyphen, while the word Roll Bar can be read on press photos from the same period. The name most likely refers to the roll bar. However, Roll Bar is also the abbreviation for Anti Roll Bar , a part of the axle suspension. A statement by the manufacturer about the name has not yet been found.

RB613

RB613 stands for R oll B ar 6 cylinder 1 , 3 liters

RB418 and RB618

Officially, these names never existed. If it had come to the production of the car with the 1.8-liter engine, then he would have been called RB418 ( R oll B ar 4 -cylinder 1 , 8 liters). Some publications also report on the RB618. The designation RB618 might be wrong, however, as the six in the designation refers to the number of cylinders and the engine only had four cylinders.

1800 cc engine on the Targa Florio 1966

According to unconfirmed information, a 1.8-liter engine in the number 202 racing car is said to have been used for test purposes at the 1966 Targa Florio . However, this information is not confirmed by another source and instead the 1-liter engine in the ASA 411 racing car is given with this start number.
