The Nakhichevan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( Azerbaijani Нахчыван Мухтар Совет Сосјалист Республикасы Naxçıvan Muxtar Sovet Sosialist Respublikası , Russian Нахичеванская Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика ) was an autonomous socialist republic of the Soviet Union .

It was located within the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic .

history

As a predecessor, the Nakhichevan Autonomous Region was separated on April 28, 1920. The Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic Nakhichevan was founded on February 9, 1924 and existed until 1991. The area was 5500 km², the population 257,000. Since the independence of Azerbaijan, the area has been the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan within the country, albeit as an exclave .

In 2008, the Azerbaijan National Bank issued one gold and one silver coin as commemorative coins for the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic .
