action

The African American Walter Lee Younger lived in 1959 with his wife Ruth, son Travis, mother Lena and sister Beneatha in a dilapidated apartment in Chicago's black district . Lena's husband has passed away and his life insurance policy will pay out $ 10,000. The check is supposed to arrive the next day.

This event casts its shadow ahead. Every family member wants to fulfill their lifelong dream. The flighty Beneatha wants to study medicine, Walter Lee is planning to open a liquor store with two friends, his wife Ruth really only wants to have a harmonious marriage. Her husband is in a life crisis, he has had enough of chauffeuring a rich white man, he would like to achieve something himself and break out of poverty. However, this increasingly leads to an enormous marital crisis. After the check arrives, Lena definitely wants to support her daughter's medical studies. She doesn't think much of Walter Lee's plans for a liquor store. Meanwhile, Ruth wants to terminate a pregnancy that nobody knows about. There is increasing tension within the family because of the money. Walter Lee is increasingly referring to alcohol.

When Lena tells everyone that she has bought little Travis a house in the white district of Clybourne Park, the world of the Youngers turns upside down. Ruth is overjoyed because she thinks of the family above all else. For Walter Lee, on the other hand, a world collapses, drowns himself in alcohol and moves further and further away from his family. After a night of partying, Lena speaks to her son's conscience. She tells him there is $ 6,500 left, of which he is to spend $ 3,000 on Beneatha's medical school and the rest is at his own disposal. As if transformed and with new courage to live, he finds his way back to his family, but invests the entire $ 6,500 in the planned liquor store. The whole family visits the house they bought, where they are visited by the white citizen representative Carl Lindner, who tells them that they are not wanted and that he wants to make an offer to buy it back. The Youngers angrily reject this.

In the middle of the preparations for the move, Walter Lee's friend Bobo bursts into the open, confessing that they were betrayed in the liquor store project and that all investments have been lost. Walter Lee shares this with his family, his mother Lena in particular is shocked because she trusted her son. For Walter Lee there is only one solution left: he orders Carl Lindner to come to his home. With the sale of the house at least part of the sum insured would be back.

Contrary to expectations, however, Walter Lee informs the entire family that they will definitely move in, as the Younger family has just as much a right to it as everyone else. Everyone is happy, especially Lena now knows that her son has finally become a man. Your own pride and identity are worth more than money.

criticism

“After the screen adaptations with Sidney Poitier (1961) and Danny Glover (1989), another (TV) film adaptation of the play of the same name, with which Lorraine Hansberry (1959) was the first black author to celebrate a Broadway success. A realistic staging with convincing actors. "

“The first Broadway play written by a black author was filmed in 1961 by Daniel Petrie with Sidney Poitier and in 1989 by Bill Duke with Danny Glover, before Kenny Leon, who comes from the theater, edited the African-American family saga one more time for TV and no less when scandal rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs cast the lead role. Largely kitsch-free, sometimes quite grim social realism with message, style and excellent performance. Friends of critical drama are right here. "
