Aart Jacobi (born February 16, 1955 in Arkel , now Giessenlanden ) is a Dutch diplomat . He was the Dutch Ambassador to Japan from 2015 and has been Ambassador to Malaysia since 2019 .

Life

Aart Jacobi graduated from high school in 1972 at a Hogereburgerschool . He graduated from Kyoto University in 1981 with a degree in Japanese Constitutional Law and Leiden University in 1982 with a degree in Japanese Studies .

He is married to a Japanese woman and has two children.

Diplomatic career

Aart Jacobi has been working for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1984. After appointments to various positions in The Hague , the United States (as Vice Consul) and Japan , he was in the human resources department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1997 and head of the economic department of the Dutch embassy in Madrid from 1997 to 2001 . From 2001 to 2005 he held the same position at the Dutch embassy in Tokyo . From 2005 to 2009 he was Director for Good Governance , Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He held his first post as ambassador from 2009 to 2012 in the former Dutch colony of Suriname . Diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Suriname during his tenure were difficult: Aart Jacobi was the only ambassador not invited to the inauguration of Suriname President Desi Bouterse in 2010 and after an amnesty was granted in 2012 for Bouterse's murders during the military regime in Suriname, the Dutch ambassador became withdrawn by the Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal . The Netherlands had obtained an international arrest warrant for Dési Bouterse. Since August 13, 2012, Aart Jacobi has been the Dutch ambassador in Beijing, succeeding Rudolf Bekink , who became ambassador to the United States . As the Dutch ambassador to China, he was also accredited for Mongolia .

From December 2015 to 2019 he was the successor to Radinck van Vollenhoven as the Dutch ambassador in Tokyo . His successor in Japan is Peter van der Vliet . Aart Jacobi has been Karin Mössenlechner's ambassador in Kuala Lumpur since 2019 .
