Aatos Jaskari

Aatos Tuomas Jaskari (born April 26, 1904 in Nurmo , Seinäjoki Province ; † March 16, 1962 ibid.) Was a Finnish wrestler . He won at the Olympics in 1932 in Los Angeles , a bronze medal in free style in the bantamweight .

Career

Aatos Jaskari began wrestling as a teenager at the Nurmon Jymy wrestling club . He started both in the free and in the Greco-Roman style and always in the bantamweight, whereby he was overall more successful in the free style.

He won his first medal at the Finnish championships in free style in 1928 when he took 3rd place in bantamweight behind Kaarlo Mäkinen and Joppe Ryhänen. He became Finnish champion for the first time in 1931 and in both styles. In addition, he was also the Finnish free style champion in 1932, 1933, 1935 and 1937.

In 1932 Aatos Jaskari was a member of the Finnish wrestling team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He started there in both styles. In the free style he won the bantamweight over Joseph Reid , Great Britain, James Trifunov , Canada and Georgios Zervinis , Greece, but then lost to Ödön Zombori , Hungary and Robert E. Pearce from the United States and won the bronze medal. In the Greco-Roman style, Aatos Jaskari lost to Jakob Brendel from Germany and Herman Tuvesson from Sweden and only came in 6th out of seven participants.

Aatos Jaskari was also able to qualify for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . There he only started in the free style in bantamweight. After a loss to Herman Tuvesson, he won over Enrique Jurado from the Philippines and Marcello Nizzola from Italy, but was then defeated by Ross Flood from the United States, with which he was eliminated and finished in 5th place.

At European Championships, which took place regularly from 1925 to 1939, Aatos Jaskari was not at the start.

Aatos Jaskari's son, Tauno Jaskari , was also a world class wrestler.
