Abdallah Fikri El-Khani
Abdallah Fikri El-Khani ( Arabic عبد الله فكري الخاني, DMG ʿAbd Allāh Fikrī al-Ḫānī ; * 1925 in Damascus ) is a Syrian lawyer , politician and diplomat . He was Minister of Tourism from 1972 to 1976 and Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria from 1976/1977. In addition, he represented his home country as ambassador in various countries and served as a judge at the International Court of Justice from 1981 to 1985 .
Life
Abdallah Fikri El-Khani studied law at the University of Damascus and the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut as well as political science and philosophy at the American University of Beirut . After completing his studies, he worked in various positions for the Syrian government between 1949 and 1959 and then until 1969 in the diplomatic service as an envoy or authorized envoy ( Ministre plénipotentiaire ) in the embassies of his home country in Madrid , Brussels , Ankara , London and Paris . From 1966 to 1969 he was also the permanent representative of Syria to the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture .
From 1969 to 1972 he served as Secretary General in the Syrian Foreign Ministry. He then took over the office of Minister for Tourism in the Syrian government from 1972 to 1976 and then in 1976/1977 the office of Deputy Foreign Minister. In 1978 he became ambassador to India with additional accreditation for Bangladesh , Burma , Nepal and Sri Lanka . He worked there until he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in January 1981 to succeed his compatriot Salah El Dine Tarazi, who had died in office, where he remained for the remainder of Tarazi's term of office until February 1985. In the 1990s he worked as one of three foreign judges at the newly created Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina .
