Abdou Kaza (* 1953 in Falwel ) is a Nigerien general and politician .

Life

Abdou Kaza was a member of Niger's armed forces from 1972 . After completing his Baccalauréat, he attended the military academy in Cherchell in Algeria from 1974 to 1976 . He worked as a trainer in the Tondibiah military camp in Niger and was promoted to lieutenant in 1977 . From 1978 to 1979 he went to the infantry school in Montpellier in France .

Kaza was the commander of various companies . He served as aide-de-camp for Prime Minister and President of the National Development Council Mamane Oumarou from 1983 to 1985 . From 1988 to 1989 he served as the commander of the training center in Tondibiah and from 1992 to 1993, initially on an interim basis, as the commander of Defense Zone No. 2 in the north of the country. There he had to deal with the attacks by paramilitaries such as the Aïr and Azawad Liberation Front during those years . As prefect of the Tahoua department , he was also employed in civil administration in 1997.

In 1999, President Mamadou Tandja designated Abdou Kaza as his aide-de-camp, which he stayed for eight years. During this time, Kaza also had general supervision of the construction work on the Village de la Francophonie in the capital Niamey , which was built for the 2005 Francophonie Games . In 2007 he was promoted to special advisor to the president and brigadier general. The following year he was appointed inspector general of the armies and the gendarmerie. However, Kaza fell out with Mamadou Tandja, who was seeking a third term as president, which is not provided for in the constitution.

When Tandja was ousted by a military coup on February 18, 2010 , Abdou Kaza was one of the first names to be mentioned in the media as possible coup authors until the leadership of the officer Salou Djibo became known. In the interim government of March 1, 2010, which was established under Salou Djibo and the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy , which he chairs, Abdou Kaza took over the post of Minister for Water, Environment and Combating Desertification . He held this function until the establishment of a new, democratically established government on April 21, 2011.

Shortly thereafter, Kaza became honorary president of the Association des Producteurs Privés de Semences du Niger (APPSN), the association of private seed producers in Niger. He also continued his military career. The new President Mahamadou Issoufou appointed him Division General in the Ground Forces in 2012 . After Yayé Garba's death in 2013, Abdou Kaza succeeded him as deputy commander of the African-led International Support Mission to Mali . Two years later he was retired from the armed forces.

Kaza was appointed governor of the Diffa region in the east of the country in 2015 . The region suffered increasingly from attacks by the terrorist organization Boko Haram from neighboring Nigeria to the south . The appointment of a seasoned military man like Kaza as governor was one of the attempts by the Niger government to respond to the changed security situation. In 2018 Kaza was replaced as governor.
