Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman

Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman ( Arabic عبد الحميد أبو سليمان, DMG ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd Abū Sulaimān ; born in Mecca , Saudi Arabia in 1936 ) is a Saudi political scientist and Islamic scholar. His focus is on the so-called " Islamization of knowledge " ( Arabic إسلامية المعرفة/ islāmīyat al-maʿrifa ), which he operates in particular from the USA . This is also the title of his main work.

Life

Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman obtained his BA degree in Commerce from the University of Cairo in Egypt in 1959 , his MA in Political Science from the University of Cairo in 1963 , and his Ph.D. in 1973. in "International Relations" from the University of Pennsylvania (USA). 1963–1964 he was secretary in the State Planning Committee of Saudi Arabia. He was a founding member of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists ( AMSS ; Association of Muslim Social Scientists ) founded in 1972 and its former president (1985-1987). He was General Secretary of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY, World Assembly of Muslim Youth) from 1973–1979. At the King Saud University in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) he taught political science from 1982 to 1984 and was chairman of the Faculty of Political Science from 1982 to 1983. From 1988 to 1998 he was rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Petaling Jaya near Kuala Lumpur . The local Kuliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences , today the largest faculty ( kullīya ) at the IIUM, founded a new center named after him on September 27, 2016, the AbdulHamid A. AbuSulayman Center for Collaborative Research in "recognition of his vision and his commitment to the improvement and exaltation of the Muslim ummah ". He is co-founder of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) in Herndon, Virginia (USA) and has authored numerous articles and books, in particular on the so-called Islamization of knowledge and the reform of Muslim society. He is the father of the Saudi women's rights activist Mona Abu Suleyman .

Act

The International Institute of Islamic Thought ("International Institute for Islamic Thought"; abbr. IIIT) in Herndon , Virginia , USA , which he co-founded in 1981 , received seed capital from the Muslim Brotherhood . Today it is financed by donors from the Gulf States and is considered one of the new players in global Islam (Leif Stenberg) and Islamist . Abu Sulayman's doctoral thesis was later published as a book by the IIIT under number 1 in its Islamization of Knowledge Series : Towards an Islamic Theory of International Relations: New Directions for Islamic Methodology and Thought .

In his book Islamization of Knowledge , he describes the current state of the Islamic umma as backward and spiritually empty. He sees the Islamic world politically, economically and culturally as a humiliated victim of the effects of European colonialism .
