In the 1997 parliamentary elections , Kassamba stood as a candidate for the United Democratic Party (UDP), of which he was a founding member, in the Central Badibu constituency. He was able to win the constituency successfully against the candidate Janko Fatou Jaiteh of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC).

Kassamba was killed in a traffic accident in January 2001 on the South Bank Road between Fula Bantang and Yero Beri Kunda together with his party comrade Buba Samura . The deceased was transferred to Old Jeshwang for burial in the Old Jeshwang Cemetery. The two opposition MPs were not honored by the state with a state act , which caused displeasure among relatives, party members and the population. In protest, the family returned the money they had received from the state.
