Achim Leutz (aerospace engineer)

Achim Leutz (born December 27, 1940 in Eisenstadt ; † June 6, 2017 in Falkensee ) was a German aeronautical engineer and flight instructor .

Life

The Eisenstadt in Burgenland (at 27 December 1940 Reichsgau Niederdonau born) Achim Leutz studied at the Technical University of Berlin aviation technology . Shortly after his matriculation , he joined the Berlin Academic Aviation Group in 1961 , and was deputy chairman of the association in 1963 and 1966.

As a student assistant to Professor Edgar Rößgers at the Institute for Aircraft Control and Aviation - the later Institute for Aerospace Technology - Leutz organized an in-house glider course for beginners at Waggum airfield in 1966 . As a candidate for flight instructor, he trained Claus Oehler, who became famous for his turbo engine concept. This course formed the basis of the "Hertelle course" established in 1970, named after Heinrich Hertel, the first professor for aircraft construction after the Second World War and Akaflieg honorary member . After completing his studies, in October 1971 he applied to the TU Berlin for the position of a university council in the field of fluid mechanics . From January 17, 1972, until his retirement on March 31, 2006, he was responsible for the successful implementation of numerous research projects as "Institute Manager " at the Hermann Föttinger Institute for Fluid Mechanics (HFI). Among other things, he was managing director of the research group “Influence and Control of Turbulent Shear Flows” and the resulting Collaborative Research Center 557 of the DFG “Influence of Complex Turbulent Shear Flows”.

Since 1972 he has been working as Berlin glider instructor BL 26, Leutz has been training manager at Akaflieg, has been training manager for the Academic Aviation Association (AFV) since it was founded at the end of 1991 and from 1978 to 1996 regional training manager for the Berlin Aviation Association in the German Aeroclub (DAeC). After 1989, he and Rainer Selle taught weekend seminars for Berliners and Brandenburgers with a GDR pilot's license in German aviation law so that their pilot 's licenses could be rewritten. He organized the annual flight instructor training courses and the theory classes of the Berlin regional association and worked as an aviation expert for the state of Berlin and as an examination board in the state of Brandenburg. From the beginning of 1991, Leutz traveled around Berlin in search of a nearby airfield that would make the lengthy journeys to the previous Akaflieg airfield at Großes Moor near Burgdorf obsolete. The search led to the site of the former Pritzwalk township, the area of which near Kammermark had already been designated as a glider flight site in the GDR's zoning plan. On March 31, 1994 the lengthy process of setting up the glider airfield in Kammermark was completed. Achim Leutz, who played a major role in the success, made the first start on April 2, 1994 together with Gregor Bremer. In the same year he organized a flight instructor course here. Three more followed by the turn of the millennium. Leutz supervised the TU courses “Experimental Flying” and “Measurement Technique II”. He organized the national youth comparison flying in 2001, the state youth comparison flying in Berlin in 2007 and the Berlin state championship in gliding in 2013, all of which were held at the Kammermark airfield. He supervised several motor glider courses for members of idaflieg as a flight instructor or examiner. In autumn 2015, Leutz stopped active flying and returned his flight license to the aviation authority .

After his retirement, Leutz intensified his preoccupation with the history of the Technical University of Berlin, especially with its Föttinger Institute for Technical Fluid Mechanics, and published the results of his research on an ongoing basis.

He died on June 6, 2017 in his home in Falkensee near Berlin.
