Acidithiobacillales form the only order within the class of Acidithiobacillia . Like all orders of the Proteobacteria tribe, they are gram-negative bacteria.

features

The individual species are rod-shaped and can move with the help of flagella. They are obligatory aerobic and chemoautotrophic . Energy is generated through the oxidation of various sulfur compounds , such as thiosulphate , polythionate and sulphide . The species Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans can also generate energy through the oxidation of iron ions .

Acidithiobacillus is acidophilic , the bacterium lives in environments with extremely low pH values. Also Thermithiobacillus can even in environments with pH values of life up to 5.2. Thermithiobacillus is thermophilic , the best growth occurs at temperatures around 43–45 ° C.

Systematics

The class of Acidithiobacillia was established in 2013, with the only order of Acidithiobacillales, which were previously included in the Gammaproteobacteria . The order consists of two families , each with one genus . Earlier herein contained species had been to the class beta-proteobacteria counting genus Thiobacillus .

The Acidithiobacillales contain the following families and genera (as of 2019):
