Vegetative characteristics

The field speedwell is an annual herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 10 to 25 centimeters. The non-rooting stem grows prostrate or ascending, is strong and usually branched at the bottom.

The leaves are short stalked. The simple, slightly shiny leaf blade is ovate-elliptical and bluntly notched to serrate. The upper leaves are also wedge-shaped and light green in color.

Generative characteristics

The field speedwell blooms mainly in the months of March to June and often again from August to October. It forms racemose inflorescences . The calyx lobes are lanceolate, rounded at the front and sometimes hairy glands. They don't overlap. The 5 to 8 millimeter long corollas are whitish and veined blue; occasionally a corolla lobe is colored light blue or reddish.

The somewhat flattened, kidney-shaped capsule fruit is clearly keeled, deeply edged and has a very pointed bay. Only glandular hairs are found on their surface, shorter, glandeless hairs are missing. The stylus has a maximum length of 1.2 millimeters and usually does not protrude beyond the capsule bay.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
