The field-Leinkraut ( Linaria arvensis ) is a plant of the genus linaria ( Linaria ). Other common names are Heidenflachs and Blauer Orant.

Vegetative characteristics

The field toadflax is an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 15 to 30 centimeters.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period is between June and August. The inflorescence is glandular with only short flower stalks. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with a double flower envelope . The crown is 1 to 3 millimeters long without the spur . The petals are blue-purple and the lower lip ridges are whitish and veined blue. The upper lip is deeply split and erect.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

Ecology and hazard

Field toadflax is a therophyte . Field toadflax is self-pollinating. The seeds are spread by the wind.

Occurrence

Field toadflax is common in the Mediterranean region and in southern, western and central Europe. In particular, it also grows in the Alps and in the Alpine foothills , where it is considered an archaeophyte . In Germany it is considered to be critically endangered.

The field toadflax usually thrives on sandy to loamy fields and avoids lime. In Central Europe it is a species of the order Polygono-Chenopodietalia, but also occurs in Secalietea societies.

Taxonomy

The first publication took place in 1753 under the name ( Basionym ) Antirrhinum arvense by Carl von Linné . The new combination to Linaria arvensis (L.) Desf. was published in 1798 by René Louiche Desfontaines .
