Actinobacillus is a genus of bacteria from the Pasteurellaceae family .
features
Actinobacillus is a slim, short, immobile, gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that can also take on spherical shapes. It belongs to the facultative anaerobes. Representatives of this genus do not form spores.
Actinobacillus is a frequent accompanying germ in actinomycoses , but is also often found in wound infections , bacteremia , animal bite wounds and endocarditis . In infections, which mainly occur when the immune system is weakened, the mortality rate is relatively high at 30%.
Depending on the entry portal, locally limited wound infections and local lymphadenitis develop. As late complications after injuries, distant infections such as B. on the inner lining of the heart , in the bones and also in the central nervous system.
therapy
Benzylpenicillins (penicillin G) are used as the agent of choice for treatment. Normally, gram-negative rod bacteria are resistant to this, but Actinobacillus is an exception. However, it is important to watch out for mixed infections with other germs.
Depending on the resistance level of the bacteria, ampicillins , cephalosporins and tetracyclines can still be used for treatment.
