Adam John Glossbrenner

Adam John Glossbrenner (born August 31, 1810 in Hagerstown , Maryland , †  March 1, 1889 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Adam Glossbrenner completed an apprenticeship in printing and then worked in the newspaper business. In the years 1827 and 1828, he published the newspaper Western Telegraph in Hamilton ( Ohio out). In 1829 he moved to York , Pennsylvania, where he founded the York County Farmer newspaper in 1831 . From 1835 he was a partner in the York Gazette , with which he remained associated until 1860; In 1862 he founded the Philadelphia Age newspaper . In 1836 he was a clerk clerk with the Pennsylvania House of Representatives ; from 1843 to 1847 he held the same position in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . He then worked for the US State Department until 1849 . From 1850 to 1860 he held the post of Sergeant at Arms in the US House of Representatives, before serving as the private secretary to President James Buchanan in 1860 and 1861 . Politically, like him, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1864 Glossbrenner was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the 15th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Joseph Bailey on March 4, 1865 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1869 . During this time the civil war ended . Since 1865, the work of Congress had been weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial.

In 1868 Adam Glossbrenner was not re-elected. From 1872 he worked in the banking industry in York. In 1880 he moved to Philadelphia, where he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad until his death on March 1, 1889 .
