action

Schecky Moskowitz is a waiter on a cruise ship that includes a lot of beauty queens, the eccentric rock star Croaker and the ship comedian Dickie Diamond. While Dickie gathers women around him with bad jokes, Schecky is dissatisfied with his life. He is unsuccessful with women, has no self-confidence and considers himself the far better comedian. Even the rock star Croaker, who looks very unkempt, can hardly save himself from admirers and gnaws at Schecky's self-confidence. Attempts to convince Dickie in a conversation that he can appear in the opening act once end with abrupt rejection. His best friend Bob, also a waiter, is constantly serving as a test listener for Schecky's jokes.

In countless daydreams, Schecky constantly introduces himself as a successful comedian and womanizer. He gets his chance when Dickie is believed dead. He leaned drunk over the railing and lost his hat. His friend Ellen, Miss Australia, discovers the hat on the water and believes that Dickie has gone overboard. He, on the other hand, has locked himself in his toilet and cannot get out due to a stuck door. During the funeral ceremony, Schecky King Neptune appears, who encourages him in his goals. In the meantime, General Noriega from Panama has put two terrorists on Miss Australia because in an interview she called him disgusting and unkempt. While the two killers board the ship, Schecky replaces the comedian Dickie with increasing success.

In a chaotic chase through the entire ship, Ellen voluntarily confronts the two terrorists and apologizes for their statements, but that does not change the situation. Bob frees her. Schecky then appears again to King Neptune, this time with his daughter Slimy, who has fallen in love with him. Both kiss in the evening sun.

criticism

"A rather tired comedy from Adam Sandler's early days, in which only a few gags ignite."

“Adam Sandler follows in the footsteps of comedians of the 50s like Jerry Lewis or Henny Youngman, and vaudeville veteran Milton Berle even has a humorous guest appearance as Himself in this otherwise toothless and simple-minded silly joke in the dream ship ambience from the early career rock days of the main Hollywood star. Billy Zane and Burt Young are barely recognizable in supporting roles or given away in some other way, and the later typical Sandler character only shimmers faintly through the grimace. "
