Adelheid of Hesse
Adelheid von Hessen ( Polish Adelajda Heska ; * 1324 ; † 1371 ) was a Hessian princess from the noble family of Reginare and through marriage to Casimir the Great from 1341 to 1368 Queen of Poland .
Life
Adelheid was born as the daughter of Landgrave Heinrich II and his wife Elisabeth of Meißen / Thuringia (1306-1367).
On September 29, 1341 she was married to the Polish king Casimir in Posen , after his first wife Anna of Lithuania had died two years earlier.
The king was known for his numerous love affairs; the couple soon became estranged and remained childless. The queen lived most of the time at Żarnowiec Castle, in what is now the Zawiercie district , where she was held captive by her husband. In 1356 the king married his Bohemian lover Krystyna Rokiczana (also Christina de Rokyczano), a widow from the wealthy Prague bourgeoisie, and lived in bigamy for eight years, also fathering male offspring with her. The intervention of Pope Innocent VI. and the bishop of Cracow, Bodzanta , who had fallen out with the king over his love affairs, could not change the situation; the king was unfaithful to his conjugal obligations to the queen. Adelheid drew her own conclusions from this and fled to Hesse , the home of her parents. In 1364 the king had his marriage to Krystyna annulled and in 1368 also to Queen Adelheid. A year later he married Hedwig von Sagan .
Despite the distance, Adelheid closely followed the events at the Kraków royal court and fought for her rights after the death of her ex-husband in 1370. She died in her Hessian homeland in 1371 and was buried in the Ahnaberg monastery in Kassel .
