Adilabad ( Telugu : ఆదిలాబాదు జిల్లా ; Urdu آدل آباد ضلع) is a district in the state of Telangana in India . The main town of the district is Adilabad .

History and creation

The district was created by the administrative reform in the Indian state of Telangana in October 2016 from parts of the then Adilabad district . A total of 13 of the 52 mandals of the Adilabad district in the borders before 2016 are now part of the new Adilabad district (the sub-districts Adilabad, Bazarhathnoor, Bela, Boadh / Boath, Gudihatnoor / Gudihatnur, Ichoda, Indravelly / Inderavelly, Jainath / Jainad, Narnoor , Neradigonda, Talamadugu, Tamsi and Utnoor).

geography

The district lies on the northern border of Telangana and is framed in the west, north and northeast by districts in the state of Maharashtra . In the east it borders on the district of Kumaram Bheem and in the southeast and south on the district of Nirmal in Telangana.

population

The last census in 2011 counted 708,972 inhabitants. Of these, 356,407 were men (50.27 percent) and 352,565 were women. Among the Dalits were 2011 99.422 (14.0 percent), the Adivasi 224,622 (31.7 percent) people. Of the total number of residents, 167,746 people (23.66 percent) lived in urban areas in 2011.

Population of the district by confession

The majority of the residents are Hindus. 596,229 people or 84.10%. There are clear differences between urban (63.67%) and rural (90.43%). And also between the individual mandals (sub-districts). In the mandals of Adilabad and Ichoda, less than 70% of the population are Hindu. In the other 86 to 97% Hindus. The only significant minority are the Muslims. They count 89,208 people or one eighth of the population (12.58%) and the majority live in the four cities. There, Muslims make up 31.88% of the population - while in rural areas only 6.6% of the population are Muslims. The Buddhists are locally and regionally significant. They only count 11,619 people across the district (1.64%). In the cities of Adilabad and Dasnapur and in some rural communities they make up a significant proportion of the population. Insignificant minorities are the Christians (2802 people; 0.4%), Sikhs (446 people; 0.06%) and Jainas (259 people; 0.04%), most of whom live in the cities.

District population by native language

Telugu , spoken in Telangana State, is a minority in Adilabad District. With 258,756 speakers (36.5%) Telugu is still in first place. Of the then (2011) 13 mandals, it is only spoken in the sub-districts Talamadugu and Jainad by more than 60% of the population. In Boadh and Tamsi, too, Telugu has a share of over 50%. Telugu is also the most widely spoken language in Adilabad (47.41%) and Utnoor (26.91%). In the mandals Indravelly and Narnoor she is in a diaspora situation. The neighboring state of Maharashtra and its Marathi language are making themselves felt. A total of 139,452 people (19.67%) of the population speak Marathi. The mandals Bela, Gudihatnoor and Indravelly, where between 31 and 45% of the people use Marathi as their mother tongue, are well above average. The high proportion of Adivasis (scheduled tribes) is also noticeable. Gondi is spoken by 121,946 people (17.2%) and Kolami by 20,737 people (2.92%). In the mandals of Narnoor (40.22%) and Indravelly (36.76%), Gondi is the most widely used language. And in the mandals of Bazarhathnoor, Gudihatnoor and Utnoor, it is spoken by 23 to 26% of the residents. The fourth most common mother tongue is Urdu . It is used as mother tongue by 76,767 people (10.83%). Around 64% of the speakers live in the Mandal Adilabad, where Urdu is represented well above average with a share of 24.79%. The Hindi language Lamani with 49,648 speakers (7%) and the actual Hindi with 14,519 speakers (2.05%) are smaller minority languages. Hindi focuses on the Adilabad and Utnoor mandals.

Significant places

The only significant town in the district is the capital Adilabad with 117,167 inhabitants in 2011. There are also three small towns (census towns) Dasnapur (22,216 inhabitants), Utnur (also Utnoor; 1,6005 inhabitants) and Ichoda (12,358 inhabitants).

education

Despite significant efforts, the goal of full literacy is far from being achieved. There are also huge differences. While around 6 out of 7 men can read and write in urban areas, less than half of women in rural areas can. The following table shows this:
