Adolf Falkenstein

Adolf Falkenstein († December 31,  1929 ) was an important Viennese k.k. Court decorator , gilder and house painter during the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy . His studio was at Josefstädter Strasse 27 in the 8th district of Josefstadt .

Adolf Falkenstein was an appraiser for carpentry and decorative painting who was sworn in by the Imperial and Royal Commercial Court . In 1874 he founded his own company, which had a studio for decorative and room painting and specialized in the production of all types of oil paints , painting and gilding, marble , wood , imitation and relief painting. Thirty years later, through hard work and talent, Falkenstein transformed his company into an extensive one from what was initially modest. His customers were not only the upper middle class and the nobility, but also the imperial family.

Among other things, he was commissioned to decorate the Empress Elisabeth's gymnasium (Pompeian room) in the Hermesvilla together with wall paintings by August Eisenmenger and Hugo Charlemont .

Rich paintings, gilding, wood and marble imitations were executed in the imperial hunting lodge Lainz, in the palace of Archduke Leopold in Hörnstein, in the villa of Archduke Wilhelm in Baden, the Hofburg and in the Palais Augarten . Falkenstein also furnished the interior in the Reichsratsgebäude , in the Schlosstheater in Schönbrunn , in the court museums , Hofburgtheater , court opera building , in the academy of fine arts , artist house , building of the Secession , then in various palaces , residential houses and hotels in Vienna.

In other parts of the monarchy, Falkenstein also received orders and equipped, for example, the Palace of Justice in Roveredo , the post and finance building in Trieste , the delegation building in Budapest , the Hotel Gasteinerhof in Bad Gastein , Hotel Imperial in Ragusa , Hotel Sonne in Innsbruck , etc. . Furthermore, at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, besides other works, the decorative painting "Alt-Wien", which was produced by the company, was presented.

He received numerous honors for his services. He was the owner of the Golden Cross of Merit with the crown and was appointed purveyor to the court.
