Adolf Friedrich Lorenz (born May 2, 1884 in Rostock , † June 13, 1962 in Schwerin ) was a German architect and preservationist .

Life

Adolf Friedrich Lorenz was a son of the Rostock businessman and entrepreneur Carl Lorenz. In 1901 he passed the Abitur and began studying mathematics at the University of Rostock , later building construction at the Technical University of Dresden , the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich . On May 22, 1908, he passed the main diploma examination at the Technical University of Braunschweig with distinction.

Lorenz completed a legal clerkship (as a government building supervisor ) and, following the 2nd state examination , an assessor (as a government building master ); during these years he worked in Lübz , Güstrow and Ludwigslust . From 1924 he worked as a supervisory and government councilor in Schwerin. In 1935 he became the spokesman for part of the Rostock population who protested against plans by the Nazi architect Erich zu Putlitz to radically redesign Rostock's old town and to straighten and widen the streets. His great enthusiasm for work, combined with a pronounced sensitivity and well-founded specialist knowledge, were the prerequisites for the remarkable results that Adolf Friedrich Lorenz achieved both in the field of urban monument preservation and in the preservation and restoration of important or more modest architectural monuments and their architectural details scored.

From 1937 to 1946, Adolf Friedrich Lorenz worked as a ministerial advisor in the German Reich's Audit Office in Potsdam .

After the end of the Second World War , in October 1946 he took over the management of the construction management of the Mecklenburg regional church in the Upper Church Council until he retired in 1951. During his work, he worked closely with the newly formed regional office on January 1, 1946 for monument preservation under Landbaurat a. D. Paul Viering worked intensively for the preservation of the remains and for the reconstruction of the churches in Rostock, Wismar and Neubrandenburg that were destroyed in the war. At the same time he is already initiating measures and planning for their subsequent reconstruction.

From 1946 to 1953 Lorenz was district curator and appraiser for monument preservation measures at the Rostock city building authority. Lorenz was involved in the creation of reconstruction plans for the Rostock city center and gave valuable suggestions, also for the design of what was then Ernst-Thälmann-Platz.

In 1954 Lorenz was given a teaching position for the theory of monument preservation and museum studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock. He was also a member of the University's Department of Art History. He was no longer able to finish his work on Mecklenburg Castle Research.

Lorenz became known for his numerous works on the building history of churches in Mecklenburg, such as B. Rostock Marienkirche , Doberan Monastery , Schwerin Cathedral or Güstrow Cathedral . In total, he published over 50 scientific articles.

His estate is in the Schwerin state archives , including 2,416 blueprints for castles, monasteries, churches, monuments and houses, as well as 198 drawings, 44 photos and 48 files. Further parts of his estate can be found in the regional church archive and in the regional office for the preservation of monuments. The grave of Adolf Friedrich Lorenz is in the old cemetery Schwerin .
