Adolf Humborg (born January 18, 1847 in Oravicabánya , Austrian Empire , † April 14, 1921 in Munich ) was a German genre painter from the Banat .

Life

Humborg was initially a commercial trainee in Temesvár and took drawing lessons from Franz Komlóssy. In 1865 he sent works to Friedrich Friedländer in Vienna and Carl Piloty in Munich. In 1867 he went to Vienna, where he initially did an apprenticeship with Matthäus Aigner . From 1867 to 1872 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Peter Johann Nepomuk Geiger , Carl Wurzinger and Eduard von Engerth .

He continued his studies from November 1872 to 1875 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Sándor Wagner . In 1876 Humborg was successful with his work Visit in the monastery kitchen, after which, inspired by the pictures of Eduard Grützner , he devoted himself to painting monastery pictures and humorous scenes from monastic life. Many of his works have been featured in illustrated magazines.

In 1876 Humborg became a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative. In 1887 he went on a study trip to Egypt , Palestine and Italy . From 1897 to 1913 he lived in Saint-Girons in the south of France, on the Spanish border, because of a larynx disease , then he moved to Munich, where he received German citizenship. From 1879 to 1897 and 1911 he exhibited works in the Munich Glass Palace . He also exhibited in London, where he received a gold medal in 1988, a silver medal in 1893 and a bronze medal in 1894.

In 1997 an exhibition of his works took place in Düsseldorf to mark the artist's 150th birthday.
