Adolf Scherbaum (born August 15, 1931 in Vienna , † March 10, 2003 in Linz ) was an Austrian composer and flautist. All of his compositional oeuvre , around 2,000 works, is in the music collection of the Austrian National Library in Vienna and was made accessible to the public by the composer's sister, Inge Adamiker-Scherbaum, on her own website.

Life

Adolf Scherbaum received his first flute lessons in 1945 from his father Adolf Scherbaum senior. (1904–1980), who was a trained carpenter and flautist for the German Masters in Vienna. In 1946 Scherbaum became a private student of Adolf Ludwig, the concert club's solo flutist. Scherbaum achieved technical successes in the first few months. In the winter semester of 1946/1947 he passed the entrance exam at the State Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He received concert training from Josef Niedermayer and Hans Reznicek , orchestral training with Josef Krips and Hans Swarowsky , composition and instrument science with Alfred Uhl . Scherbaum also took the subjects of piano , general music , harmony , chamber music , form theory , general music history and rhythm and ear training . The first compositions for flute and piano were written while studying, which both Josef Niedermayer and Hans Reznicek performed on various occasions.

After graduating with honors in 1951, Scherbaum became first flautist in the Opera Studio Orchestra (conducted by Hans Gabor ). Several trips abroad followed, including to Japan , participation in the Bad Gastein spa orchestra for the 1952 season and in the same year he was employed as a solo flutist at the Linz State Theater (later Bruckner Orchestra Linz ), to which he remained until his retirement in 1996.

Adolf Scherbaum was a co-founder of the New Ensemble Linz and founded the Linz Wind Quintet , with which he performed many of his chamber music works for over two decades.

Concerts

Radio broadcasts and recordings ( ORF , Radio Bremen ), 1995 own broadcast ("Adolf Scherbaum Studio Drei"), world premiere of the concerto for oboe and string orchestra SWV 260 (1966) on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the Brucknerhaus, or prelude for large orchestra and organ SWV 633 (1969) for the inauguration of the Brucknerhaus , further concerts in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Japan.

Works

Adolf Scherbaum's work comprises almost 2,000 compositions: around 700 large orchestral concerts (including 95 flute, 38 piano, 34 violin, 18 trumpet, 17 oboe, 14 clarinet, 11 horn, 6 bassoon, 3 Trombone concerts and 3 concerts for viola), 11 symphonies, approx. 650 works for chamber music (wind instruments and strings), several masses, cantatas , songs, over 300 solo pieces for practically all orchestral instruments and large organ, stage and ballet music, folk music arrangements, around 100 Compositions for jazz ensembles or jazz orchestras as well as light music.
