Adolf Schmidt (pseudonym Schmidt-Dolf ; born April 23, 1845 in Breitenfurt , Archduchy of Lower Austria; Austrian Empire ; † November 28, 1905 in Hetzendorf (Vienna) , Vienna, Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian music teacher, choir director and composer. For many years he was director of the Horak music school in Vienna. Here he acted as a lecturer for choir and solo singing. In addition, he directed various Viennese choirs such as the Vienna Singing Academy and the Wiener Damen-Gesangverein, which he founded himself, and appeared as a composer mainly of choral works, songs and piano pieces.

Life

Adolf Schmidt studied four semesters of Law (Jus) at the University of Vienna . As part of his musical training he had piano lessons with August Tuma, Josef Adalbert Pacher (1818–1878) and Josef Dachs , singing lessons with Friedrich Schmidt (1812–1884) and Julius Stockhausen, as well as lessons in music theory and composition with Simon Sechter and Franz Krenn . He is said to have also received lessons from Anton Bruckner. After he had finally decided on a career as a musician, he became music director at the Kollegium Kalksburg in 1867 . From 1879 to 1905 he taught piano and singing at the Horak piano school . In 1879 he was choirmaster of the Wiedener men's choir. From 1881 to 1884 he led the Vienna Singing Academy as artistic director together with the choirmaster Eusebius Mandyczewskis . In February 1882 Schmidt-Dolf became the deputy choir master of the district association of choral societies in Vienna and the suburbs. In 1883 he became head of the newly established department for solo singing at Horak's piano school. He also directed the institute's choir school. In September 1883 he became choirmaster of the Vienna Commercial Choral Society . In 1885 he founded the Wiener Damen-Singverein. Paula von Lichtenfels was a member of his singing class at the end of the 1880s . Schmidt-Dolf soon headed the Wiedener School of the Horak Institute. After a break, in January 1889 he again took over the position of artistic director at the Viennese choral society he founded. On May 5, 1891, Schmidt-Dolf celebrated his 25th anniversary as an artist. A commemorative ceremony took place in the hall of the Wiedener Musikschule. In a program comprising 30 contributions, all compositions by Schmidt-Dolf, the students of the institute presented his work to the large audience. In May 1896 he again gave up his position as choir master of the Vienna Ladies Choir. Until his death in 1905 he headed the Wieden Institute of the former Horak'schen Music School, which is now named after its new director, the pianist Franz Brixel (1862-1914).
