Life

His parents were the pastor Johann Heinrich August Schmitthenner (1818-1893) and his wife Mathilde Luise née Herbst (1822-1894). Adolf Schmitthenner attended elementary school and then the Latin school in Neckarbischofsheim. From 1869 he attended high school in Karlsruhe. After graduating from high school, he studied theology in Tübingen, Leipzig and Heidelberg. After the second state examination he became vicar in Brötzingen in 1876 and then, from 1878 in Kippenheim .

He spent the winter half of 1879/80 studying in Berlin, England and Scotland. He then became vicar in Lahr and later in Heidelberg , where he married Aline Wagner on March 30th. In 1881 he moved to Karlsruhe as city vicar , and in 1882 as pastor in his hometown Neckarbischofsheim. In 1893 he was called to Heidelberg as city pastor, one of his varied activities in Heidelberg was to teach there as a teacher at the Protestant theological seminary.

In addition to theological and literary works, Schmitthenner wrote numerous novels, stories and dramas. His novel Das Deutsche Herz and the novella Psyche were his greatest successes. His short stories, which appeared from 1883, were also popular among young people as literature. Schmitthenner never crossed the borders of his closer home with his fabrics. The romantic Neckar Valley, the Hirschhorn and Zwingenberg am Neckar castles, the imperial city of Heilbronn and the city of Heidelberg are its scenes. He described his compatriots as coarse, impartial, efficient, cheerful and endowed with an impartial sense of humor.

Schmitthenner was able to fall back on the 17th century thanks to his extensive source studies, for example for his novella Tilly in need . Invited by the Association for the Mass Distribution of Good Folk Literature to submit an application, he is considered the preparer of the Gutenberg Book Guild .

Adolf Schmitthenner died in Heidelberg at the age of only 52. He was buried in the Heidelberg mountain cemetery and rests in a family grave. Schmitthenner was married to Aline Wagner (1857–1922) and had four sons and two daughters. His son Heinrich Schmitthenner (1887–1957) was an important geographer, his son Ludwig Paul Schmitthenner (1884–1963) was Baden's Minister of State and professor of military history and politics during the Nazi era. His daughter Aline (1881-1936) was married to the university professor, composer and music writer Martin Karl Hasse (1883-1960).
