Adolf Schwarz (rabbi)

Adolf Arye Schwarz ( Hebrew אדולף אריה שוורץ; born July 15, 1846 in Adásztevel near Pápa , Austrian Empire ; died February 13, 1931 in Vienna ) was an Austro-Hungarian rabbi and publicist .

Life

Adolf Schwarz began his Talmudic studies with his father Jacob Schwarz, who was a rabbi in Adász-Tevel. He then attended grammar school in Pápa and then the University of Vienna , where he studied philosophy. He took lessons from A. Jellinek and IH Weiss at the local Israelite Prayer House Association Beth Hamidrash Talmud Torah . From 1867 he attended the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and continued his studies in philosophy there. From 1870 to 1872 he published two award-winning essays: "About Jacobi's opposition to Kant, Fichte and Schelling" (dissertation) and "About the Jewish calendar system ."

After completing the Breslau seminar , he received an offer to teach at the State Rabbinical School in Budapest , but since the opening of this school was postponed, he went to Karlsruhe , where he worked as a city and conference rabbi for 18 years. In 1893 he was called to Vienna, where he was the rector of the new Israelite Theological Institute (ITLA).

His son was the rabbi and codicologist Arthur Zacharias Schwarz .
