David Adolphe Constant Artz (born December 18, 1837 in The Hague , † November 8, 1890 ibid) was a Dutch painter who dedicated his work to the life of Dutch fishing families.

From 1855 to 1864 Artz studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam with Johannes Hinderikus Egenberger and Louis Royer . Under the influence of Jozef Israëls , he dedicated his work to the life of Dutch fishing families and the beach scenes. He worked with Israëls in Zandvoort in 1859 .

Artz spent the period from 1866 to 1874 in Paris, where he studied with Gustave Courbet , on whose advice he founded his own studio. At that time he was financially supported by the Dutch writer Johannes Kneppelhout . In Paris he lived with the violinist Jan de Graan, of whom he painted a portrait. He was also in close contact with his Dutch colleagues Jacob Maris and Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer . While living in Paris, he went on a number of trips abroad: in May / June 1869 he visited Scotland , November 1869 Germany , June 1870 England and January 1872 Italy .

During these years Artz was quite successful commercially; He sold numerous works through the renowned art dealer Goupil & Cie. The art dealer Theo van Gogh , who worked in Paris and Vincent van Gogh's brother , also had works by Artz in his collection at the end of the 1880s. During his time in Paris, Artz took on influences from Japanese art and impressionism, which, however, only came to bear later in his work.

From 1874 he lived and worked again in The Hague, where he again chose the life of Scheveningen fishermen as the main theme. He was a member of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij and was by King Wilhelm III. awarded the Order of the Oak Crown . He died in 1890, not yet 53 years old.

Artz's works are in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam , the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Katwijks Museum .

His son Constant David Ludovic Artz (1870–1951) was also active as a painter, as well as an art teacher and dealer. He signed his works, especially landscapes with mills or ducks by water, with Constant Artz .
