Adriaan Blaauw
Adriaan Blaauw (born April 12, 1914 in Amsterdam , † December 1, 2010 in Groningen ) was a Dutch astronomer .
Blaauw studied at the Universities of Leiden and Groningen and worked at the Yerkes Observatory , the Leiden Observatory and the University of Groningen , among others . His research focused on star clusters and the less dense star associations , ' outlier stars ' released from binary star systems during the explosion of a partner , the structure of the Milky Way as well as star formation and the cosmic distance scale.
Blaauw was a successful science manager. Among other things, he was co-founder of the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics , from 1970 to 1974 second general director of the European Southern Observatory and from 1976 to 1979 president of the International Astronomical Union . He also published on the history of astronomical research organizations such as the ESO and the IAU.
