Adriaan Joseph Heymans (born June 11, 1839 in Antwerp , † December 16, 1921 in Brussels ) was a Belgian impressionist landscape painter .

Life

When Adriaan Joseph Heyman was seven years old, his father died. Therefore, he then lived with his uncle, the mayor of Wechelderzande , a small town near Antwerp. During this time he began to be interested in landscape painting.

In 1853 Heymans began his studies at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp under Jakob Albert Jacobs , but later switched to the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. However, he decided to teach himself the art of painting and to find his own style. During a stay in Paris from 1855 to 1858 , he was heavily inspired by the Barbizon School and then turned to the style of Impressionism .

After he moved back to Wechelderzande in 1860, he began painting open air there . He also worked in the area around Kalmthout , where he developed the Kalmthoutse School , also known as the Gray, together with Isidore Meyers (1836-1917), Théodore Baron , Jacques Rosseels (1828-1912) and Florent Crabeels (1835-1896) School , as gray and silver colors were mainly used. He also worked in the parishes of Dendermonde and Genk .

Heymans married in 1869 and moved to Brussels. There he was a founding member of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts and other painters' associations.

In 1881 he was awarded the Leopold Order with an Officer's Cross for his artistic merits . He was also made a knight in the French Legion of Honor .

In the 1890s he moved back to Kalmthout and continued painting there. In 1913, however, his health deteriorated so badly that he had to decide to give up painting. Heymans finally died in December 1921 at the age of 82.
