Adriano Maggiani

Adriano Maggiani (*  1943 in La Spezia ) is an Italian archaeologist and Etruscanologist . He teaches as Professor of Classical Archeology at the Ca'-Foscari University of Venice .

life and work

Maggiani graduated from Pisa with a degree in archeology and specialized at the Italian Archaeological School of Athens ( Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene ) . Since 1975 Maggiani was an archaeologist with the Archaeological Supervision of Tuscany ( Soprintendenza archeologica della Toscana ). In 1990 he became a professor at the Ca'-Foscari University of Venice. From 1998 to 2002 he was director of the Institute for Italian Etruscan Archeology (Istituto per l'archeologia etrusco italica) of the National Research Council ( Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche CNR) .

Maggiani carried out excavations in Turkey , Calabria , Latium and especially Tuscany . He dealt in particular with problems of funeral architecture and sculpture , the Etruscan religion and epigraphy as well as with aspects of the art and culture of the pre-Roman Ligurians and Venetians .

Maggiani provided a basic overview of the problems of reading and interpreting the Tabula Cortonensis and the names of the gods on the bronze liver of Piacenza . For the Corpus Inscriptionum Etruscarum (CIE), a collection of ancient Etruscan inscriptions , he wrote volumes 3, 4 (Tit. 11539-12113). For Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum (ThesCRA), a multi-volume reference work on the religious cults and rites of antiquity, Maggiani provided some contributions.
