Aeonium gorgoneum is a species of the genus Aeonium in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
Aeonium gorgoneum grows as a perennial , branched shrub and reaches stature heights of up to 2 meters. The smooth, bald, ascending shoots are 5 to 15 millimeters in diameter and usually form groups. Their rosettes reach a diameter of 9 to 20 centimeters and are quite flattened in the middle. Young leaves are tightly pressed together. The inverted lanceolate-spatulate, green leaves are 5 to 10 centimeters long, 1.5 to 3 centimeters wide and 0.3 to 0.6 centimeters thick. Towards the point they are pointed or pointed and have an attached point. The base is wedge-shaped. The edge of the leaf is covered with straight or forwardly curved eyelashes that are up to 0.5 millimeters long. The leaves are often reddish along the margin and midrib .
Generative characteristics
The pyramidal inflorescence has a length of 5 to 8 centimeters and a width of 7 to 10 centimeters. The inflorescence stalk is 5 to 8 inches long. The eight to ten-fold flowers are on a 1 to 9 millimeter long, bare flower stalk . Their sepals are also bare. The yellow, reddish variegated, lanceolate, pointed petals are 5 to 6 millimeters long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters wide. The stamens are bare.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Systematics and distribution
Aeonium gorgoneum is endemic to the Cape Verde Islands and occurs there on Santo Antão , São Nicolau and São Vicente at altitudes of around 300 to 1,300 meters.
The first description by Johann Anton Schmidt was published in 1852.
A nomenclature synonym is Sempervivum gorgoneum (JASchmidt) JASchmidt ex Cout. (1914).
