Aeroperú ( Empresa Nacional de Aeronavegación del Perú, SA ) was the national airline of Peru . It existed from 1973 to 1999. Financial problems led to the end of the company.

history

Aeroperú started its aviation business in 1973 to take over the international destinations from APSA (then a subsidiary of Pan Am ). Initially, Aeroperú was mainly controlled by the Peruvian Air Force .

From its base at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, the airline's route network grew both nationally and internationally. The fleet at that time included the Fokker F28 , Boeing 727 and Douglas DC-8 . South American airports were mainly served, but also Mexico City and Miami .

In the 1990s Aeroperú ran into economic difficulties. Therefore, 47 percent of the company was sold to Aeroméxico . The external appearance was adapted to that of Aeroméxico. At that time, three Boeing 727-200 and three DC- 10-15 aircraft were bought by Mexicana , a minority holding of Aeroméxiko. For this purpose, three Boeing 757s were made available. The airline now also flew to Los Angeles .

Financial problems forced Aeroperú to cease operations on March 10, 1999, and on August 18, creditors resolved to liquidate the company's assets.

In 2001, following the bankruptcy of AeroPerú, former employees made several attempts to resume aviation operations with a 737-200 and a 727-100 with no result.

In November 2019, Transportes Peruanos Globales SA , which has acquired the AeroPerú brand, announced the resumption of operations and that it already has permission to offer 15 domestic destinations in Peru. The company has a year and a half for this from the official announcement of the approval.

Incidents

Aeroperú has suffered two serious incidents in its history, in which two machines had to be written off as total write-offs and 82 people died:

  • On October 25, 1988, a Fokker F28-1000 Aeroperú (OB-R-1020) took off from Juliaca Airport , but hardly gained any altitude. When both the landing gear and the buoyancy aids were then retracted and the thrust was reduced at the same time, the machine stayed a few meters above the ground in the air before crashing 1.8 kilometers behind the runway onto a road that was surrounded by ditches on both sides. Then the machine slid 220 meters further into a river bed. There were 65 passengers and 4 crew members on board the machine. 12 people, including 11 passengers, were killed in the accident (see also Aeroperú flight 772 ) .
  • On October 2, 1996, an Aeroperú Boeing 757-200 (N52AW) crashed into the sea shortly after take-off from Lima Airport near Pasamayo , after the pilots had received incorrect and contradicting measurement data, especially from the airspeed indicator , shortly after taking off . The aircraft accident investigation revealed that the maintenance team had forgotten to remove a masking tape over the measurement openings before take-off. This was placed there to prevent water from entering the openings when the machine was washed shortly beforehand. To make matters worse, the ground radar was subsequently unable to provide any support. This ultimately led to the crash of the machine in the Pacific Ocean . This incident damaged the airline's reputation so much that it was never able to recover from it ( see also Aeroperú flight 603 ).
