Location and surroundings

The Aferer Geisler are the western part of the Peitlerkofel group in the Dolomites. In the south they are bordered by the Villnößtal , in the north by the Aferer Tal and the Lüsner Tal , in the east they end at the Peitlerscharte , which separates them from the Peitlerkofel .

The Aferer Geisler are mainly located in the area of the South Tyrolean community Villnöß , only the eastern parts slightly above the Peitlerscharte belong to St. Martin in Thurn . The highest areas of the mountain range are protected in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park . These are accessed through the Günther-Messner-Steig .

structure

The Aferer Geisler is a relatively short, rugged and strongly indented dolomite mountain range which, however, sends long wooded foothills to the west into the Eisack valley. The most important peaks of the Aferer Geisler are from east to west: Ringspitze ( 2625  m slm ), Wälscher Ring ( 2607  m slm ), Tullen ( 2652  m slm ) and Weißlahngrat ( 2494  m slm ).

Surname

The name Aferer Geisler or Geiseln is a modern expression of alpine circles from around 1900. It is based on the Geisler peaks opposite on the south side of the Villnößtal . In the local population, parts of the group were previously known as Rueffen / Ruefen or simply Kofel .
