from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 10th African Games 2011 took place from September 3 to 18, 2011 in Maputo , Mozambique .

In April 2005, Lusaka , the capital of Zambia , was chosen to host the 2011 African Games by the African Sports Council at a meeting in Algeria . A year earlier, Ghana had announced a possible application, but did not realize it. In December 2008, Zambia resigned from hosting the Games, as financial problems made it impossible to host the Games. Eight months later, in April 2009, Mozambique agreed to host the Games.

Since Mozambique had agreed to host the games at short notice, only about two and a half years before the date, some sports for which there were insufficient venues had to be excluded from the games. Nevertheless, competitions in 23 sports were held at the Games.
