Agathis moorei is a species ofthe Araucaria family (Araucariaceae). It is endemic to the New Caledonia archipelago.

description

Agathis moorei grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 15 to 40 meters. The trunk is usually unbranched to the base of the broad and rounded crown . The tips of the thin branches are drooping. The whitish trunk bark is resinous and flakes off in fine scales. The inner bark is light brown to reddish in color.

The yellowish buds are around 4 millimeters long and consist of a few bud scales. The young leaves have a short petiole, are lancet-shaped with a length of 10 to 20 centimeters and a width of 1.6 to 3.3 centimeters and are opposite on the branches. Older leaves are linear, lanceolate, oval to elliptical in shape, with a length of 4.5 to 7 centimeters and a width of 0.6 to 1.2 centimeters. They are almost sessile or have a long petiole. Their upper side is dark green and their underside is colored pale green to blue-green.

The male cones have a 0.8 to 1.2 centimeter long stem and are cylindrical in shape with a length of 2.5 to 5 centimeters and a thickness of 0.6 to 1 centimeter. They contain microsporophylls with four pollen sacs . The spherical and obovate to pear-shaped female cones are 10 to 15 centimeters long and 9 to 12 centimeters thick. They consist of broad, rounded, irregularly serrated and finely toothed cone scales. The elongated seeds are up to 1.5 centimeters long and about 1 centimeter wide. They have two wings, the longer, oval wing is up to 2 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Agathis moorei is on the island of Grande Terre, part of New Caledonia .

Agathis moorei thrives at altitudes of 200 to 1000 meters. It mostly grows scattered in lower lying rainforests. Usually only soils are populated that have not formed on ultramafic rock .

Agathis moorei is classified as "endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The main reasons for endangerment are the felling for wood production as well as the fragmentation of the living space through fires and the extraction of agricultural land. The total population is estimated to be less than 10,000 fully grown trees and the regeneration rate of the species is given as low. The total stock is considered to be in decline.

use

The wood from Agathis moorei is used.
