description

Agave garciae-mendozae grows solitary or with sparse runners with a height of 75 to 130 cm and is 100 to 175 cm wide. The dark green to bluish, fleshy, lanceolate leaves are 30 to 80 cm long and 6 to 13 cm wide. The horny leaf margins are irregularly serrated. The gray end thorn becomes 2.5 to 5 cm long.

The paniculate, straight inflorescence is 3 to 5.5 m high. The yellow to light green flowers appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and are 25 to 40 mm long. The flower tube is 1.5 to 2.5 mm long. The elongated to elliptical three-chambered capsule fruits are 15 to 20 mm long and 8 to 10 mm wide. The black, moon-shaped seeds are 3 to 5 mm long and 2 to 2.8 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

Systematics and distribution

Agave garciae-mendozae is common in Mexico in the states of Hidalgo , Queretaro and San Luis Potosí in the Rio Moctezuma Basin. It grows widely scattered on limestone slopes, in dry canyons and in woodland at an altitude of 1,800 to 2,350 m. It is associated with Mammillaria species and numerous succulent species.

The first description by Raquel Galván Villanueva and Luis Hernández-Sandoval was published in 2002.

Agave garciae-mendozae is a member of the Marginatae group . Typical are the open rosettes with the stiff leaves and the horny, toothed leaf edges. The taxonomic status is controversial. Characteristic, different properties (rosette, leaf and flower structure) of the other representatives of the Marginatae group, Agave horrida and Agave kerchovei, were used for the determination. Nevertheless, it is similar to the Marginatae representatives Agave lophantha as well as Agave univittata . There is a need for further research.
