description

Agave wocomahi grows individually and forms compact rosettes. The rosettes are 80 to 130 cm high and 150 to 200 cm wide. The green to bluish, linear to lanceolate, variably arranged leaves are 30 to 90 cm long and 9 to 25 cm wide. They are narrowed at the base. The wavy leaf margins are serrated irregularly. The strong end thorn is 3 to 6 cm long.

The panicle inflorescence becomes 3 to 5 m high. The yellow to green flowers are 65 to 85 mm long and appear on the upper part of the inflorescence on the variably arranged branches. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 18 to 22 mm long.

The elongated brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 50 to 60 mm long and 15 to 20 mm wide. The moon-shaped, shiny black seeds are up to 7 mm long and 4.5 to 5 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave wocomahi grows on the west side of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico in the states of Sonora , Chihuahua and Durango , on limestone slopes and in woodland at 1400 to 2500 m altitude. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by Gentry was published in 1942.

Agave wocomahi is a representative of the Ditepalae section . The occurrence is scattered in the Sierra Madre Occidental . The plants growing in small colonies are widespread. The species can be distinguished within the group by its flower structure. It is easily mistaken for Agave bovicornuta , but differences in leaf and flower structure are recognizable. Individuals can be found at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson .
